Assassin’s Creed Valhalla<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a 2020\u00a0action role-playing<\/a>\u00a0video game<\/a>\u00a0developed by\u00a0Ubisoft Montreal<\/a>\u00a0and published by\u00a0Ubisoft<\/a>. It is the twelfth major installment in the\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/a><\/i>\u00a0series, and the successor to 2018’s\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Odyssey<\/a><\/i>. Principally set in\u00a0the years 872\u2013878 AD<\/a>, the game recounts a fictional story during the\u00a0Viking expansions into the British Isles<\/a>. Players control Eivor Varinsdottir, a\u00a0Viking<\/a>\u00a0raider who, while attempting to establish a new Viking clan in\u00a0England<\/a>, becomes embroiled in the centuries-old conflict between the\u00a0Assassin Brotherhood<\/a>, who fight for peace and liberty, and the\u00a0Templar Order<\/a>, who desire peace through control.[c]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The game also includes a framing story, set in the 21st century, which follows Layla Hassan, an Assassin who relives Eivor’s memories so as to find a way to save the Earth from destruction.<\/p>\n

Development of the game began in 2017, around the release of\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Origins<\/a><\/i>. Ubisoft Montreal led its three-year development with help from fourteen other Ubisoft studios worldwide, as well as Sperasoft. Numerous people involved in the development of past\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/i>\u00a0games returned for\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>, including Ashraf Ismail,[b]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0who served as the creative director for\u00a0Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2013) and\u00a0Origins<\/i>;\u00a0Darby McDevitt<\/a>, the lead writer for\u00a0Black Flag<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Assassin’s Creed: Revelations<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2011) and co-writer of\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Unity<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2014); and composers\u00a0Jesper Kyd<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Sarah Schachner<\/a>, who composed the game’s soundtrack alongside musician\u00a0Einar Selvik<\/a>. Similarly to\u00a0Origins<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>, the team conducted extensive research into the time period to make the game world as historically accurate as possible, and drew inspiration from\u00a0Norse mythology<\/a>\u00a0for certain narrative elements. The team also sought to address some issues found by players with\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>, such as its over ambitiousness, small focus on the Assassin-Templar conflict, and the absence of traditional\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/i>\u00a0gameplay elements like social stealth.<\/p>\n

Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0was released for\u00a0PlayStation 4<\/a>,\u00a0Windows<\/a>,\u00a0Xbox One<\/a>,\u00a0Xbox Series X and Series S<\/a>, and\u00a0Stadia<\/a>\u00a0on November 10, 2020, with the\u00a0PlayStation 5<\/a>\u00a0version following on November 12. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for the narrative, characters, voice acting, visuals, soundtrack, world-design and the interconnectivity of activities, while being criticized for its length, technical issues, and repetitive structure. The game had the biggest launch in the\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/i>\u00a0series to date, selling the most copies within its first week and becoming the second most profitable Ubisoft title of all time. Ubisoft supported\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0extensively with two years of additional content, including both free and paid story\u00a0expansions<\/a>, game modes, and events. The game will be followed in 2023 by\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Mirage<\/a><\/i>, which features a historical setting in\u00a0Baghdad<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0Islamic Golden Age<\/a>\u00a0and follows Basim Ibn Ishaq, a major supporting character from\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0is an action role-playing video game structured around several main story arcs and numerous optional side-missions, called “World Events”. The player takes on the role of\u00a0Eivor Varinsdottir<\/a>\u00a0(\/\u02c8<\/span>e\u026a<\/span>v<\/span>\u0254\u02d0r<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>),[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0a\u00a0Viking<\/a>\u00a0raider, as they lead their fellow Vikings against the\u00a0Anglo-Saxon kingdoms<\/a>. The player has the choice of playing Eivor as either female or male (voiced by\u00a0Cecilie Stenspil<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Magnus Bruun<\/a>\u00a0respectively),[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0or letting the game alternate between the two at key moments in the story (with the female avatar depicting Eivor’s life[d]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the male avatar depicting the physical appearance of the Isu\u00a0Odin<\/a>, due to his connection with Eivor).[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The player is also able to customize Eivor’s hair, beard, war paint, clothing,\u00a0armor<\/a>, and\u00a0tattoos<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The variety of weapons available to the player has been expanded to include weapons such as\u00a0flails<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0greatswords<\/a>. Combat has been changed to allow dual-wielding of almost any weapon, including shields,[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and every piece of gear that the player collects is unique.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The Eagle Vision mechanic of previous titles returns in the form of “Odin Sight”.[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The player’s companion animal is a\u00a0raven<\/a>\u00a0named S\u00fdnin[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0(Old Norse for “insight”)[11]<\/a><\/sup>[e]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0who can be used to scout the nearby areas, much like previous avian companions had done in\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Origins<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>, and other parts of the game world from afar before Eivor engages in combat.[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0There is more focus on the stealth aspects for both traversing the game world and in combat. The “social stealth” concept from earlier\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/i>\u00a0games returns: Eivor can hide from enemies not only in stationary environmental objects but can pull down the hood and slip into certain crowds to use them as cover. Eivor can feign death, use her raven to distract guards, and can access a hidden blade for near-instantaneous assassinations. Most of the game’s enemies, through specific combinations of approaches, tactics, and weapon selection, are able to be assassinated through a single attack, with the notable exception of bosses, but still can be defeated through numerous other routes.[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0has a familiar structure of main story missions and a number of optional side-missions. While the main storyline in past\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/i>\u00a0games typically moved linearly through the main sections of the game world,\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0has the player often returning to the main settlement and back to areas previously visited as information about the new areas of England is learned by the Vikings through reconnaissance or from contacts. Not all missions require violent ends, with some that can be resolved through diplomatic means.[14]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Player choices through conversation or gameplay options will affect the characters and their political alliances with other\u00a0non-player characters<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The game also relies less on a traditional\u00a0leveling system<\/a>\u00a0and instead focuses more on the selection of skills through\u00a0skill trees<\/a>\u00a0selected by the player as Eivor advances through the game. The difficulty posed by enemies is rated based on the player’s collection of skills.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The development team aimed to introduce a wider range of enemy archetypes to\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0than in previous titles as they wanted the player to be continually surprised by the game even after playing for tens of hours.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Narrative director Darby McDevitt said that the game has 25 unique enemy archetypes, and each “has a unique way of challenging the player.” Enemies can also use objects in the environment to their advantage. Some enemies are also capable of adapting to the player’s actions and combat and finding ways to defend themselves. Enemies can also show personality during combat. While some might be intimidated by Eivor and fight more defensively, others might be more aggressive in their approach.[15]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Conquest Battles, a feature introduced to the series in\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>, return in the form of “Assaults” which see the player lead armies to attack fortresses.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0“Raids” are smaller engagements where the player leads a raiding party to attack a target and secure resources for their settlement.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The player is able to build a raiding party by recruiting\u00a0non-player characters<\/a>\u00a0to assist with these.[16]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The player is able to create a Viking mercenary, or\u00a0Jomsviking<\/a>, that can be recruited by other players to act as a non-playable character within those games; the player gains additional in-game rewards for successful missions that their Jomsviking takes part in.[16]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As part of the game’s first season of DLC content, an expanded “River Raids” game-mode was introduced which offers replayable raiding locations in new regions of England not reachable in the main map.[17]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The game also sees the return of player settlements, which have been absent from the series since\u00a0Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag<\/a><\/i>. However, where previous player settlements offered passive gameplay bonuses, the settlement in\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0takes on a renewed importance. Game director Ashraf Ismail described this as being “[because] a lot of what you’re doing in the game world is, at the end of the day, going to feed into the settlement so that it can grow, it can flourish.” Quests start and finish in the settlement and the player is able to direct the construction of certain types of buildings, which in turn provide benefits for gameplay. To build these structures, the player needs to lead the Vikings on raids to collect resources.[18]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As with\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>, the player is able to explore romance options for Eivor, including same-sex relations.[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Though the use of naval transport has returned, naval combat has been dialed back. Eivor’s\u00a0longship<\/a>\u00a0acts more as a means of travel when performing raids and for escaping after land combat, rather than being used in combat with other naval vessels.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In addition to these, the player can engage in a variety of activities such as; hunting, fishing, brawls with other Vikings, drinking contests, and\u00a0flyting<\/a>\u00a0challenges, which Ubisoft described as “Viking\u00a0rap battle[s]<\/a>“,[20]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in addition to an original dice game called “Orlog” and\u00a0Cairn<\/a>\u00a0construction.[21]<\/a><\/sup>[22]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Synopsis<\/span><\/h2>\n
The movement of the\u00a0Great Heathen Army<\/a>\u00a0in England in 865 CE during the\u00a0Viking expansion<\/a>, near the time when\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0takes place, and showing some of the kingdoms the player explores in the game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In 873 CE, political pressures in\u00a0Norway<\/a>\u00a0prompt\u00a0Eivor Varinsdottir<\/a>[d]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and her adoptive older brother, Sigurd Styrbjornsson, to lead their clan of Vikings to\u00a0settle new lands<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Anglo-Saxon<\/a>\u00a0England, as part of the\u00a0Viking expansion across Europe<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[23]<\/a><\/sup>[24]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The clan comes into conflict with the kingdoms of\u00a0Wessex<\/a>,\u00a0Northumbria<\/a>,\u00a0East Anglia<\/a>, and\u00a0Mercia<\/a>\u00a0over the next several years,[23]<\/a><\/sup>[25]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0as well as the warring sons of the legendary Viking warrior\u00a0Ragnar Lothbrok<\/a>, who made up the\u00a0Great Heathen Army<\/a>.[24]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Eivor’s clan faces forces led by the rulers of these kingdoms, including\u00a0Alfred the Great<\/a>, the king of Wessex.[18]<\/a><\/sup>[26]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is during this time that Eivor meets the Hidden Ones\u2014precursors to the Assassin Brotherhood\u2014and aids them in their fight against the Order of the Ancients\u2014precursors to the\u00a0Templar Order<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Explorable cities in the game include\u00a0Winchester<\/a>,\u00a0London<\/a>, and\u00a0York<\/a>.[27]<\/a><\/sup>[f]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Parts of Norway and\u00a0Vinland<\/a>\u00a0are also included,[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0while dreamscapes of\u00a0Asgard<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jotunheim<\/a>\u00a0also feature.[28]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

As with previous games in the series,\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0also features a narrative set in the modern day, which follows Layla Hassan, the modern-day protagonist previously featured in\u00a0Origins<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>.\u00a0Valhalla<\/i>\u00a0also contains story elements related to the Isu, who, as part of the lore of the\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/i>\u00a0series, are an advanced civilization that pre-date humanity.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Plot<\/span><\/h3>\n

In 2020, the unexplained strengthening of\u00a0Earth’s magnetic field<\/a>\u00a0negatively affects the planet. Layla Hassan, Shaun Hastings, and Rebecca Crane receive a signal with coordinates in\u00a0New England<\/a>, where they exhume a Viking raider’s remains. Layla, struggling with the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus\u2019 influence, enters the Animus to view the raider’s memories.<\/p>\n

In 855 CE in Norway, a young\u00a0Eivor Varinsdottir<\/a>\u00a0witnesses warlord\u00a0Kjotve the Cruel<\/a>\u00a0sacking her hometown and killing her parents before she is rescued by Sigurd, son of King Styrbjorn of the Raven Clan. Seventeen years later, Eivor has been adopted by Styrbjorn, and pursues vengeance against Kjotve. Her latest attempt fails, but she recovers her father’s axe. Touching it, Eivor experiences a vision of\u00a0Odin<\/a>, leading her to consult the local\u00a0seeress<\/a>, Valka. Valka induces another vision of Sigurd losing an arm before being consumed by\u00a0a giant wolf<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sigurd returns from an expedition with foreigners Basim and Hytham, members of the Hidden Ones, who came to Norway to assassinate Kjotve, a member of the opposing Order of the Ancients. Defying Styrbjorn’s orders, the siblings enlist\u00a0King Harald<\/a>‘s help to eliminate Kjotve. Following their victory, Harald declares his intention to\u00a0unite Norway under his rule<\/a>. Styrbjorn pledges fealty to Harald, angering Sigurd, who expected to inherit the crown. He and Eivor take loyalists in the clan on an exodus to England, establishing the settlement of Ravensthorpe. Eivor then secures alliances with neighboring Saxon kingdoms and Viking clans led by\u00a0Ivar<\/a>,\u00a0Halfdan<\/a>,\u00a0Ubba Ragnarsson<\/a>,\u00a0Guthrum<\/a>, and\u00a0Ceolwulf of Mercia<\/a>, and helps Hytham assassinate local Order members, following tip-offs from a “Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ.”<\/p>\n

Eivor’s visions continue. Valka gives her an elixir that makes her dream of\u00a0Asgard<\/a>\u00a0from Odin’s perspective. Hoping to avert his own fated death during\u00a0Ragnar\u00f6k<\/a>, Odin imprisons\u00a0Loki<\/a>‘s son\u00a0Fenrir<\/a>, who is foretold to kill him, and travels to\u00a0Jotunheim<\/a>\u00a0to retrieve a magical mead that will ensure his and the other\u00a0Aesir<\/a>‘s souls will be reincarnated. Layla realizes these are actually visions of the Isu shortly before the\u00a0Great Catastrophe<\/a>, and that Loki, who was forbidden to reincarnate himself after betraying Odin, found another way to ensure his survival.<\/p>\n

Sigurd and Basim discover an Isu relic, and Sigurd, with Basim’s encouragement, comes to believe himself a god. Fulke, an Order agent and servant of\u00a0King Aelfred of Wessex<\/a>, captures Sigurd, believing him to be an Isu or descendant thereof, and tortures him, removing his right arm. Eivor and Basim kill Fulke and rescue a traumatized Sigurd. Eivor and Sigurd later travel to Norway, where they uncover an Isu temple with an advanced\u00a0tree-shaped<\/a>\u00a0computer system. The siblings connect to it and are seemingly transported to\u00a0Valhalla<\/a>, where they enjoy endless battles, until Eivor realizes Valhalla is a\u00a0dream-world<\/a>\u00a0and escapes with Sigurd after resisting Odin’s influence. Outside, they are confronted by Basim, who reveals himself, Eivor, and Sigurd to be reincarnations of Loki, Odin, and\u00a0Tyr<\/a>, respectively. Basim, having been overtaken by Loki’s personality, attacks Eivor, seeking revenge on Odin, but she and Sigurd trap him in the computer.<\/p>\n

Sigurd abdicates leadership of the clan to Eivor. In England, Eivor and her allies join Guthrum’s assault on Wessex, defeating Aelfred’s forces at the\u00a0Battle of Chippenham<\/a>. Eivor later tracks down Aelfred, and learns that he is the Grand Master of the Order of the Ancients and the “Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ”. Disgusted by the Order’s heresy against\u00a0Christianity<\/a>, Aelfred sought to replace it with\u00a0a new God-fearing order<\/a>. Eivor spares Aelfred and returns to Ravensthorpe to a hero’s welcome.<\/p>\n

In the present, the Assassins deduce the strengthening magnetic field is a result of\u00a0Desmond Miles<\/a>‘s\u00a0activation of the Isu towers<\/a>\u00a0in 2012. To stabilize the field, Layla travels to the Norway temple and enters the simulation. She meets Basim, who reveals that he led the Assassins to Eivor, and tells her how to stabilize the magnetic field. She does so, but this releases Basim and traps Layla in the simulation. Layla encounters a being called “the Reader,” and decides to work with him in the computer to prevent future disasters, allowing her mortal body to die. Meanwhile, Basim escapes the temple with the Staff of Hermes\u2014containing the consciousness of Loki’s lover, Aletheia\u2014and meets Shaun and Rebecca.
