Avowed

Avowed: A New Legend in the Pillars of Eternity Universe

Since its initial reveal, Avowed has been one of the most talked-about titles in the modern RPG landscape. Developed by the legendary Obsidian Entertainment—the minds behind Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds—this first-person fantasy epic has finally matured into a definitive experience. Now that we are well into 2026, and the game has seen significant post-launch support and a broader platform release, it’s time to take a comprehensive look at why Avowed is a mandatory play for any RPG enthusiast.

Avowed

Set in the world of Eora (the same setting as the Pillars of Eternity series), Avowed shifts the perspective from isometric strategy to immersive, first-person action. It’s a bold move that pays off by making the magical and mundane elements of this universe feel more tangible than ever before.

Exploring the Living Lands: A Land of Contrasts

The heart of the Avowed experience is its setting: the Living Lands. This isn’t your standard medieval European fantasy map. Instead, Obsidian has crafted a frontier continent defined by “wild” energy and ecological extremes.

Avowed

The Living Lands are divided into several distinct biomes, each with its own ecosystem, architectural style, and political tension. From the fungal, neon-lit forests of the Emerald Stair to the sun-scorched, rocky canyons of the Shattermarch, the visual variety is staggering.

Unlike massive, procedurally generated worlds that can feel hollow, Avowed utilizes a “zoned” open-world approach. This design philosophy ensures that every cave you discover and every ruin you stumble upon has been hand-placed with a specific story to tell. This density of content is what sets the Avowed game apart from its contemporaries.

The Dream Scourge: A Narrative Hook

You play as an Envoy sent by the Aedyr Empire to investigate a mysterious spiritual plague known as the Dream Scourge. This affliction doesn’t just kill; it twists the “Essence” of living beings, turning them into crystalline, mindless husks. Your unique ability to manipulate Essence makes you the only one capable of stopping the spread, but it also makes you a target for various factions who wish to weaponize your power.

The “Classless” Combat System: Build Your Own Hero

One of the most praised aspects of Avowed is its fluid, classless progression system. Obsidian intentionally moved away from rigid archetypes like “Warrior” or “Mage,” opting instead for a skill-tree-based approach that rewards experimentation.

Master of All Trades

In Avowed, your “build” is determined by what you choose to equip and the active abilities you unlock. You can seamlessly switch between playstyles:

  • The Spellblade: Carry a sword in your right hand and a freezing spell in your left. This allows you to shatter frozen enemies with a physical strike for massive “Impact” damage.

  • The Marksman: Utilize flintlock pistols and enchanted bows to pick off enemies from afar before they even realize you’re there.

  • The Pure Elementalist: Using dual wands or a heavy Grimoire, you can rain down fire, lightning, and corrosive acid.

The combat feels weighty and deliberate. Parrying a heavy blow from an Xaurip or dodging the lunge of a forest troll requires timing and awareness. With the 2026 Balance Patch, the developers have fine-tuned the stamina system, making melee combat feel more responsive than it was at launch.
