Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Onimusha: Way of the Sword – The Return of Capcom’s Legendary Samurai Epic

After two decades of silence, the cherry blossoms are falling once again on one of gaming’s most beloved franchises. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not just another sequel; it is a high-stakes, 2026 reboot designed to bring the “Samurai Resident Evil” formula into the modern era. Developed by Capcom, this title marks the first mainline entry since 2006, trading the fixed cameras of the past for a visceral, third-person action experience that stays true to its roots.

Whether you are a veteran who remembers parrying Genma on the PlayStation 2 or a newcomer drawn in by the recent Netflix series, this guide explores everything you need to know about the Onimusha: Way of the Sword game.

A New Legend: Miyamoto Musashi Takes the Stage

Unlike previous entries that focused on Samanosuke Akechi or Jubei Yagyu, Onimusha: Way of the Sword introduces a legendary historical figure as its lead: Miyamoto Musashi.

In a brilliant nod to classic cinema, Musashi’s character model is based on the legendary actor Toshiro Mifune (Seven Samurai, Rashomon). Set in early Edo-period Kyoto, the story follows a younger Musashi as he navigates a city choked by a supernatural mist known as “Malice.

The Narrative Setting

  • Location: A dark fantasy reimagining of Kyoto.

  • Protagonist: Miyamoto Musashi (Modeled after Toshiro Mifune).

  • Antagonists: The Genma—demonic entities led by a resurrected malevolence.

  • The Artifact: The iconic Oni Gauntlet, which Musashi uses to harvest souls.

Core Gameplay: Modernizing the “Issen”

The biggest question fans had was whether the game would follow the “Soulslike” trend. Director Satoru Nihei has been firm: Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a linear action game, not an open-world RPG or a punishing Soulslike. It focuses on the “clashing of blades” and deliberate, rhythmic combat.

1. The Soul System

The Oni Gauntlet remains the heart of the experience. As you defeat enemies, you absorb three types of souls:

  • Red Souls: Used for upgrading weapons and enhancing Musashi’s techniques.

  • Blue Souls: Fills the Oni Power gauge to unleash devastating Oni Armaments.

  • Yellow Souls: Vital for health replenishment during intense battles.

2. Issen and the New “Break Issen”

The signature Issen (one-hit kill counter) returns, rewarding players for perfect timing. However, 2026 introduces the Break Issen. By parrying and depleting an enemy’s stamina gauge, you can trigger a cinematic finisher that dismembers foes or deals massive damage to bosses.

3. Oni Vision

Exploration is more than just walking from point A to B. Using Oni Vision, Musashi can reveal hidden paths, detect invisible Genma threats, and solve the environmental puzzles that have been a staple of the series since the beginning.
